What is the best answer to this business question?

Say you own a small mom %26amp; pop store...a person calls and states that they were only charged $.88 on their credit card instead of $8.58. They offer to come back and pay the balance. Do you let them or do you tell them that it was the stores mistake and not to worry about it??

If your looking for long term business with your customers,It%26#039;s better not to charge it to your customer after all it%26#039;s your store%26#039;s mistake. By that am sure your customer will appreciated your honesty and it will be pass by mouth how good your store was then more customers will come to your shop.Sometimes in business there%26#039;s some sacrifices to gain the trust of the customers. But if they still insist to pay, it%26#039;s up to you to decide.

If it were me I would ask them to come back to the store. When they arrived I would make a major issue of their honesty and integrity and introduce them to my employees with congratulations and thank you%26#039;s from each of them. I would accept the balance they offered and in return I would give them something from the store worth at least twice that. I would contact local media to do a story focused on their honesty which would also create some good publicity for my business. The customer should leave feeling very special and appreciated and my business would get well over twenty or so dollars worth of free publicity.|||Yes, what kugay said. And if they insist on paying (because they probably understand that you are not making much money if the total sale was 8 bucks), then you get their address and send them a nice thank you card and say how much you appreciated their honesty.

If you do charge it, offer to charge it without them having to come back in. If they insist on coming back in, try to have a small gift, like a coffee mug with candy, ready to give to them upon their return.|||Yep, exactly what Robert said.

in the end its not about the money, and it never should be. 8 bucks? Pfft!!
