If a business makes a copy of your Drivers License does that violate the Patriot Act?

Also is it legal for a business to make a copy of your debit/credit card? Any help you can offer would be appreciated.

I would never allow a business to make a copy of my debit or credit card. They have absolutely no need for it. Just seems like an opportunity for ID theft.

If you mean a photocopy, then no.

Any other type of copy would be considered a forgery.|||If that business is the place you just got hired to be an employee at, then NO.|||i know it is not illegal to make a copy of your drivers license.

unless you tell them they cant. if its for credit. basically if you dont let them do it, then you dont get credit.

i dont think its legal to to make a copy of of a credit card. but you should not let them do that.|||i dont know why they would need a copy of your debit card, that sounds fishy!|||Many businesses will make a copy of employees%26#039; drivers%26#039; licenses as part of a background check. This is legal and does not violate the patriot act (which does more to take AWAY privacy and personal freedom than to protect it).

Many companies still use an older method of running a credit card, where they put it in a device that makes a copy of it on carbon paper. This is the only reason I can think of for a company to make a copy of a credit card, and it is also legal.

If you feel uncomfortable about a company doing either one of these things, you should definitely speak up and ask someone why it is being done.|||It%26#039;s perfectly legal. Sorry.|||I don%26#039;t know why they need a copy of your credit card. But my business demands a copy of drivers licenses for a number of reasons.

For one...here in Michigan they have some pretty good laws to at help fight folks who bounce checks. But a part of the law says in order to take advantage of it, you must have accepted their drivers license as proof of ID when they wrote you a check.

Well, obviously, if you go to court and the judge asks the check writer if they showed their ID, they will always say %26quot;No%26quot;. So we make a copy for proof.

Also comes to good use when you have to sue them.....the picture makes it very easy for the process server.|||In my business, auto finance we have no choice because our lenders require a copy of the customers drivers license and besides that we need a copy so we can prove the we are in compliance with the Patriot Act by documenting that the customers are who they say they are.

Plus if we have to repossess the vehicle, its%26#039; a lot easier for the repo man to identify the customers with a copy of their drivers license.

As far as a debit card, I can not think of a valid reason for that.
