Why is Detroit in such poor shape? Can't something be done? A new Mayor...what?

I read in the news that, on average, houses in Detroit are being sold for less than the cost of a new car. 6 bedroom mansions are being sold for around $100,000.00. The unemployment rate and the poverty level are higher than anywhere else in America. I know they don%26#039;t have the auto industry going for them anymore but danm! It is so run down and dirty - it looks worse than a ghost town. It%26#039;s so sad...how can this city be brought back to life?

I say the same thing brother.

Michigan has the higest unemployment rate in the country (8%) but that number is skewed because detroit proper has a rate of unemployement or underemployement (people working many jobs per week) of near 30%.

There are entire blocks of crack houses right next to some of the most beautiful neighboorhoods (boston-edison, etc) Why is that tolerated? The cops know all about it....what are they doing, oh thats right, nothing.

I think what the city needs is something other than the darned sporting events to bring people from the suburbs into the city.

Why? They have money and the people in the city for the most part dont have any. (too poor - unemployed!)

Make the city feel safe. Why is it only greektown has 2 cops per block - oh yeah, because people come to spend money there and it right next to the cop shop. Tear down all the darned abandoned buildings - get some of those people in wayne county prisons who are non-violent offenders out on day work release cleaning the place up - they should earn part of thier keep if we have more inmates than any other place in the country as well.

Make belle isle the national jewel it once was (it was designed by the same guy who did central park) - get the dopemen, rowdy thugs and other low lifes outta the place and make it a pleasant place for people to picnic and fly kites. Lets face it, that place is just plain dangerous if its either hot or dark out.

Get Kwame outta office - because he enables a police force that is crooked as...just plain crooked.

Get big box stores in the city - I never thought I would say that - but I lived in detroit and had to move because it was juat plain a 30 mile drive to shop at a decent grocery store - or a target, or whatever. I mean really, where is there to shop in the city? you HAVE to go to the suburbs. you cant keep money in the city, if you have to leave it to spend it.

Sigh, thats just a few of my ideas and rantings.

I have a bunch - but I%26#039;m sure that you have some of your own.

Thanks for posting the question - its something that has bothered me for a long time.

Great Answer and I agree on what is being said. Report It

|||The entire area was dependent on the automotive industry and thanks to the morons who work at Ford and GM they are all shutting down their manufacturing lines. The short answer is, no, nothing can be done.|||Get rid of the %26quot;you know whats%26quot; in all the big cities and we may be able to live in a civilized world. Americans don%26#039;t know how to make cars without Japanese supervision so Detroit is out. Our manufacturing base is now in communist China. We have been had by corporations selling out our people. Big business executives that outsource should be shot for treason.|||What makes you think that one man can change the economic future? It takes every one to pull together. The city can be brought back to life, if we pull together. One thought for everyone..............Buy American, Keep Americans Working.|||To turn something around that is in such dire straights the people have got to want to do it. Nothing changes when you just turn around and run. The government can not always do it by themselves, they need everyone%26#039;s help. Oh by the way thanks for telling me about the 6 bedroom mansions, I think I will go check it out.|||Detroit is in poor shape because of the same reason that Africa is in poor shape. I%26#039;ll let you connect the dots.
